I was going to rant about ‘emo,’ and I will, but not today.

As I was going to St. Ives, I met a men with seven wives, seven wives had—seven wives had… no, wait, seven days of the week.

There are seven days in a week. For those of you under the age of 5, they are Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

Sunday and Monday are flagrantly in Germanic and Romance tonguages, Sun Day and Moon Day… it’s obvious, really, when you actually sit down and think about it.

Tuesday which comes to us via Old English “Tiwsdag” or “Tiw’s Day.” Tiw was Ye Olde English Godde of war and law. I know how that sounds, but they really do go together… or, at least, are supposed to. Anyway, that comes to us by way of the Norse/Scandinavian Tyr, god of combat. As an aside, I think it’s interesting that there are separate gods in Norse myth for fighting and for warfare. If you’re going to get into a fight, you pray to Tyr. If you’re going to war, you pray to Odin. But, back to Tuesday: so, that’s where we get Tuesday in English. Not too terribly hard to follow. What is starting to fascinate me is the link with Classical mythology. See, what’s Tuesday in French? Mardi. In Spanish it’s, what? Marte? Both from Mars. Mars is also Ares from Hercules: the Legendary Journeys. And Ares, god of Mars, holds dominion over battle. The name Mars is, in fact, where we get words like “martial.” So, that’s a neat overlap.

This gets followed up with Wednesday which used to be Odinsdaeg but through complex linguistic evolution involving things like elision and metathesis became Wednesday and it means “Odin’s Day” or, if you like Wagner, “Wotan’s Tag.” Odin, the all father, the wise, the wanderer, Gandlyr, Grimm, Gallow’s God, Glad-of-War, Grayhame… he has a lot of names. He’s also the god for lots of stuff, so, that all makes sense. What’s germaine here is that Odin is also the God of cunning, of magic, of guile, and of words. You know how Jesus was supposedly crucified for three days and then ascended to Heaven? Well, Odin was crucified for nine days. Upside down. And he lived because he is hard-fucking-core. So, instead of ascending to Heaven, for which the all father is too cool, he unlocked the secrets of magic, writing, and the runes. Woot. Cakes. And, while I could go on, this is probably a good time for me to move on to the Romantic side and talk about Mercredi, Miercoles, and Mercoledi (that’s Odin’s Day in French, Spanish, and Italian) which take their appellations from the Latin Dies Mercurii translating neatly to “the Day of Mercury.” Mercury is the classical god of commerce, communication, and magic. It’s the communication and magic part that’s actually important here, though. Same day. Different name.

This continues, by the way, even if I do not.

…meaning that I’m going to stop for now.

How weird is that?

Side note: this is happening around 1812 like the overture which is all before the unification of Germany.

In the course of their collecting of folktales in the oral tradition (very important that part is) they came across the story of Cinderella.

Here’s where it gets p-funky.

They weren’t actually being told the story of Cinderella as much as they were being re-told the story of Cindrillon as written by Charles Perrault over a century earlier.

Cindrillon wears “souliers du vair” which is “slippers of vair.” Vair is the same word in French as it is in English and it is a type of squirrel fur.

There is no German word “vair.”

So, remember this is in the oral tradition, being unfamiliar with this fairly unusual word, the German people heard “souliers du verre,” as in “une verre du lait” a glass of milk.

And that is why Cinderella wears glass slippers.

And now you know something new.

PS: Cinderella was also originally titled “Cindrillon et Les Souers Cannibal” or “Cinderella and the Cannibal Sisters” in case you ever wondered where her father was in that whole mess.

I got to listen to them play ‘never have I ever’ and sing songs.

Then I missed my train because I has to write an incident report.

Maybe we can do it again on Friday.

The script is Roman square capitals and the most intriguing thing about it is that, apart from its naturally clean and dignified look, it has no descendants or forebears, existing entirely on its own in paleographic history. Zing.

I think far too much of the calligraphy currently available oozes with the Bible and, I… don’t.

The quotation comes from David Cross’ bit on his album, “Shut Up, You Fucking Baby” which is very clever and incisive. You should buy it.

Lucas, with nowhere to go, rides to Missouri where he meets Master Po who shows him the way of the Tao and together, they head to the Los Eisley Cantina where they hire a wagon, driven by Dutch smuggler Hans Szolo and his dancing bear, Joey, to take them to Kansas where Lucas will continue training under Master K’en.

In Oklahoma, they find out that the Clanton and McLaurie families are running a cattle smuggling operation between Oklahoma and Kansas. On their way to send a telegram to Master K’en, they encounter Curly Bill Vader who kills Master Po leaving Lucas to make his way to Kansas and Master K’en, where he will have to rescue Josephine Marcus, on his own.

Wednesday's gonna lose

I designed this flyer for my friend Matt’s band. They’re playing right now, but, it’s kind of far and I have to get some sleep.

I’d love to talk about how he gave me the image of Inidiana Jones with silly glasses and a six-sided die and I added everything else. I’d love to talk about the distressing effect and how it begins to give the feeling of age, of memorabilia. I might even get into how much I like that the name of the club where they’re playing is subtley recessed which actually gives it more prominance. I might even like to discuss the fonts used or the spikey balloons… but this is just a test post for the category, so, I simply don’t have the time and hope that you enjoy the image as it was ultimately used.
